BRUSSELS: King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) signed a $5 million agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the sidelines of the fourth European Humanitarian Forum held in Brussels.
This programme aims to rehabilitate 33 damaged bakeries across various Syrian governorates.
The project, formalized by KSrelief Supervisor General Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah and UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, aims to restore essential bread production infrastructure through basic restoration, installation of new production lines, maintenance of existing equipment, and rehabilitation of two mobile bread production units.
This initiative targets regions with high numbers of returnees, displaced persons, and host communities, seeking to bolster food security by reinstating operations of government-run bakeries affected by years of conflict.
By increasing production capacity and improving bread quality, the project is expected to meet the essential needs of approximately 1.4 million people while creating around 500 jobs in the bakery sector, thus supporting local economic recovery.
KSrelief’s participation in the forum underscores the Kingdom’s ongoing humanitarian commitment to enhancing food security and alleviating hardships in Syria in cooperation with UN agencies.
The forum gathered humanitarian leaders worldwide to discuss priorities, geopolitical challenges, and to reinforce respect for international humanitarian law, ensuring aid access and protection for humanitarian workers.
